Welcome to this Chequamegon Middle School Web Page!
On this site you will be able to locate my weekly letters that have the main events of the week and our spelling and vocabulary words. This is one way to stay in touch and create a way for parents to know what is happening in their middles schooler's life here at school. There will be a hard copy that the students get each week, but you can see it here too, if it does not get to your house.
Our new reading series is called Reading Street which is a product of Scott Foresman. This series is a balanced approach to reading that includes the core standards and options for interactive technology. There is also the ability for students to grow in their reading and move into an advanced level of reading with comprehension. There is also the fluency element that can be practiced anywhere simply by having your child read aloud. Younger siblings or cousins or neighbors can be an excellent resource to work this skill and give the adults a bit of a break too!
This reading series includes the spelling and much of the language arts elements needed to meet the students' needs. There will also be times when the student and I will venture out into the world of trade books. We have several books to choose from and learn about while we read them. During those times there may not be work from the reading series coming home, but rather novel work that will continue the process of becoming a strong reader.
Overall, my goal is to try to help our students develop a love of reading. First, we need to make sure that what the kids are reading they can understand and get through. This is the fluency part of reading. When kids can read without stumbling or confusion over vocabulary it becomes less of a chore and more of an enjoyment. Remember, you are the best model for your child and the more they see you reading, the more likely they will pick up a book to read.
